1.)I imagine a man and a woman standing together alone getting ready to break up. The speaker tone is of relief.
2.)The speaker seemed to have wanted to be out of the relationship for some time but couldn't find the way to do it. "Cleanly and free" suggest that this is exactly what he wanted.
3.)He repeats often to let the reader know that theres obviously something wrong with the two of them. They have to break it off in order for the both of them to be fine. There shouldnt be any kind of love between them.
4.)I would feel as if I was never loved.I would just want to end the relationship anyways.
5.)The relationship has been on the rocks. It wasnt working at all.Presenting "love" as a dying person makes me believe that it was the end.The ned of something that they had and they now have to move on.
6.)This "you" is a person whose relationship is falling. It tells us that this person gives up whereas trying to make things work.
7.)He proably felt hurt by her.I think that he was trying to get over her, but never really could.Since she moved on, he tried to move on as well.
1.)The first two paragraphs lead me to believe that the hammock was a place that her and her dog frequently used as a relaxing place.I could see myself ina similar scene and if I was, I would feel relaxed. The fact that she felt more like the dogs protector tells me that her dog was scary. He wouldnt be able to protect her from the bear that she makes reference to.
2.)Yes paragraphs 3-6 alter the mood made by the first two paragraphs. The first two seemed like a calm setting while 3-6, seemed as if it was a noisy vacation. There were noises around her that she didnt find relaxing.
3.)"Her hands lift to cover her breast"-I was thinking that her hands were across her breast as a reaction to being shocked or scared.I also thought that she could have been laying on the hammock in like a bathing suit top and her seeing the bear look at her, could have been like her seeing another human look at her, so she tried to cover herself up.
4.)In those paragraphs, it tells how she loved her bear, but this bear was a stuffed animal. In the story, she tries to kill the bear. Her mom throwing away the bear may have made her begin to dislike bears.
5.)The bear couldnt have been that big if she decided to move her sofa onto the porch , so that she could sit there some evenings.
6.)In the seventh section, the readers sense of danger builds because it begins to talk about the killings that have happened due to bears. We are first told of cultures that honor bears, then told the bad things that bears do.
7.)The summer days are marked with an X because she doesnt like those days. Her memories of the visits to her aunts house in the summer werent great ones.Wolves would keep her up because their howling would stir up the neighborhood dogs and she was scared of the bears at the zoo.
8.)I wonder how many times she had to shoot the bear for it to finally die.It must have been a big beear after all if it tok s long to die.I found it interesting that in the morning she went and buried it.
9.)No I do not find the last sentence surprising. In one of the cultures(Lapland), after they hunt the bear, and have a funeral and feast, they put its bones back together in the ground.I felt that she was kind of doing the same thing. She got a gun for hunting, so I think that she was at the cabin in the woods, to hunt the bear. After she has done this, I think she decided to follow the Laplands culture and thats why she's returning next summer to dig up the claws.

questions page 88-94
page 89 questions
1) I imagine a guy and a girl stranded alone with nobody to help them. The tone I think being used is king of sad and negative.
2) Lines 2-4 make it seem as if the person is in a good mood and has a feeling of relief. The words "cleanly" and "free" support a positive tone.
3) The repetition of saying lovers should break it off emphasizes the author's point of view and shows how he feels. It adds feeling to him not believing in love.
4) I would not feel good about myself because the person wants nothing to do with me.
5) The last six lines make me think that the couple had a good relationship.
6) The "you" addressed in the poem is anybody who is reading the poem. The poem is written in first and second person point of view making it seem as if it is actually a conversation between two people.
7) Knowing the relationship between the author and person he wrote the poem about, it makes me think as if the author always had special feelings about the lady. He was not able to to express them personally so he wrote a poem to let people know how he feels without knowing it is completely about him and his life.
page 93-94 questions
1) The first two paragraphs make me think of a person camping in the woods alone with just their dog. When I first read that she became the dogs protector it made me think she was a lady who grew up in the wilderness. Maybe her father or brother brought her camping as a kid. She was used to being in the woods and was not bothered by noises or animals.
2) Paragraphs 3-6 do not alter the mood set by the first 2 paragraphs. The story stays peaceful and relaxed. The mood in the third section contrast the mood from the beginning because it shows how she is alert of her surroundings, maybe scared, because of the bear that is close.
3) After reading that sentence is makes me think that she is alone in the woods with no belongings. She is naked and has no clothes to keep warm.
4) Paragraphs 12-16 make the reader thinks she has always liked bears. Since she had a stuffed bear as a kid, she has always been interested in bears.
5) Her constructing a porch and moving a sofa on to the porch makes me think the bear is a good sight to look at. The lady wants to be comfortable to enjoy being around the bear.
6) Paragraphs 19-21 show different ways in which bears have been worshipped over time, whether it was by putting the bones back together after a feast or just making offerings to a bear's head. The reader's sense of danger builds in the seventh section by reading about different ways bears hurt other animals and humans.
7) Summer days on the calendar are marked with an X because those are the days bears are out. Winter days are not marked with an X because bears are in hibernation.
8) After reading paragraphs 32-41, I was somewhat surprised with the actions of the lady. In the beginning of the story she seemed as if she liked bears and had an interest in them since she was a child. When I found out she killed the bear it made me feel as if she was killing one of her interests, something that was a part of her since she was a child.
9) The last sentence about her digging up the bear and taking his claws does not surprise me after hearing stories that people told her about bears hurting or killing animals and humans with their claws. Since she was not hurt or killed by the bear's claws, she probably would like to keep them as a special memory to her surviving.

Questions pg. 84-94
1) In the first line I imagined a couple who was just in a car accident. One or both of them are dying and experiencing one last kiss. I imagine the speaker is using a tragic but relieved and understanding tone.
2) The tone shifts to somewhat sarcastic and negative but still relieved. Cleanly and free suggest that this was an easy breakup and perhaps the author was not expecting that.
3) The repetition is to get the point across and reflect the actual breakup itself. Perhaps the author's lover had a hard time understanding it was over and the speaker had to reiterate their point. Again it adds to the speaker's point, it is over and the former lover must understand and accept that.
4) As the person being addressed I would be offended. Was the love shared so horrible that we need to completely forget it ever happened?
5) The last six lines make the breakup seem less harsh. I like the comparison of love as a dying person. It is very realistic that sometimes love simply and slowly dies out.
6) "You" is the ex lover. The evidence of this is seen in, "let us kiss and part", "cancel all our vows" and "when we meet at any time again." Those lines show that the speaker is physically and emotionally leaving someone.
7) That information skews who I thought was the speaker. I assumed that Michael Drayton was the speaker. But if Anne married someone else it is presumable that she was the one to break off their love or maybe they never had a relationship he was just in love with her. So I now feel that Anne is the speak and Michael Drayton is simply retelling his tragic story.
1) The first two paragraphs remind me of the cabins we stay in for our family vacations. The second paragraph reminds me of my dog who like the one in the story is a big baby. I have been in a similar situation and I don't mind to much, but I do wish my dog was a little more protective. I found that line kind of humorous and nostalgic.
2) Paragraphs 3-6 do alter the mood of the first two paragraphs. The section makes the story take a kind of creepy turn.
3) At first I thought that she was scared and her hands came up to her chest. But after rereading the sentence she could have been tanning topless on the hammock and covered her breasts because she thought someone was on her property.
4) Paragraphs 12-16 determine that she is fond of bears. They hold a great deal of nostalgia for her.
5) The construction of the porch and movement of the sofa allowed her to use those noises as an excuse instead of hearing the bear. The bear's smell gives me a gross and annoyed feeling of the bear. It is already hanging around her cabin and now it smells bad. I thought making the bear a him was interesting because instead of being annoyed by a man like most women she has a bear.
6) Each one of the traditions or stories end with the bear dead or a person dead. So you feel her heightened sense of attention to the dangers of the bear. She even goes to town and buys a rifle to protect herself with.
7) The summer days are marked with an X because the cabin is her summer home, the rest of the year is clear because she is only there during the summer. It has nothing to do with the bear.
8) At first I was scared for her, that the bear was entering her home and that perhaps the stories of the bears before was foreshadowing her death via bear. But then it was sad that it took so long to kill the bear and that he suffered so much.
9)I found the final sentence surprising. I thought that this woman had buried the bear because she felt bad about slowly and painfully killing him not for gain. Plus it is a gruesome image of digging up a bear you killed to take the claws off it's decaying body.
Questions from page 89
1) As I read the first line I imagined two people looking around realizing that there is no one there, kissing, and then leaving each other. I imagine the speaker using a tone that sounds like he is giving up on something, almost like a defeated tone.
2) The next three lines have a more joyous tone saying he is glad and free of something. This suggests that he is glad that whatever is bothering him he is now free from and has wiped himself clean from it.
3) I think the speaker uses the repetition to make a point to whomever he is speaking with. The extreme declaration would also prove this point and drive it home, so to speak.
4) If I was the person being addressed in the poem then I would hope to understand what the speaker is talking about by the time he gets to line 8. I would probably feel confused unless I knew and felt mutually about the breaking off.
5) My view changes in the last 6 lines because the poem sounds as if there is one last little hope for the relationship but it can be broken easily. Love as a dying person could mean that there is little hope left and all of it will soon be gone.
6) I imagine this you is the other person in the relationship with the speaker. Clues to this would be the way the speaker refers to himself as "I" and it sounds as if he is talking directly to someone.
7) This information proves my response with that the speaker was in love at one point and realized he could never have her therefore his love for her had to die.
Questions from page 94
1) I can imagine myself in the same scene relaxing on a hammock in the middle of the woods with my dog, making me feel relaxed. I believe that the owner could in fact be more of the protector than the dog especially if the dog was awaken by the slightest shift in the wind.
2) I think paragraphs 3-6 do alter the mood because the first 2 paragraphs had more of a relaxed calm mood while the thought of a bear at a zoo seems more tense than relaxed. In the third section the mood goes again from calm and relaxed to scared and tense.
3) The statement creates more of a scared expectation, the first response to when one is frightened is to curl up try to protect yourself, therefore giving me an imagine of fearfulness.
4) Her attitude towards bears used to be a comforting feeling until she found out that her bear was no more, obviously upsetting her. From there on she no longer had a positive attitude towards bears and the comforting feeling was lost.
5) I would expect the bear to be a lot bigger than the woman therefore intimidating her making her judge the bear as a male instead of as an "it".
6) In paragraphs 19-21 it explains how different cultures dealt with a bear, whether it be to honor the bear after it is killed or let it be by not bothering the bear. Her fears are increased in the seventh section after hearing stories about how bears have hurt and even killed people.
7) I think the summer days are marked with an X because those are the days that she needs to be careful when alone. They could mean that the bear walks around freely and those are the days that she needs to watch herself.
8) In paragraphs 32-41 my reaction was glad for the woman finally killing the thing that was haunting her. I was happy that she had defeated the bear for good.
9) I don't think the final sentence is surprising at all because the way that she killed the bear. She has defeated it and now wants revenge for the times she was fearful of it.
2) The next three lines have a more joyous tone saying he is glad and free of something. This suggests that he is glad that whatever is bothering him he is now free from and has wiped himself clean from it.

answers to the questions pg 88-94
As you read the first line, what scene do you imagine taking place? At the end of the first line what tone do you imagine the speaker is using?
In the first line I have a scene in my head that it is two people who were in a relationship and they now have to either separate or say good bye for now. I imagine the tone is sad. two lovers have to be separated and it doesn't seem like they want it to happen.
How do the next three line (2-4) affect you perception of the speakers tone? what do the words "cleanly" and "free" suggest about the speakers tone ?
The lines 2-4 change my perception of the speakers tone. It changes to more of a happy tone and ot seems like he wants the girl to find some one better than him. The words cleanly and free mean he is happy to get on and move on to a new life.
The speaker says about ten times that the lovers should break it off. Why all the repetition? And why the extreme declaration that not "one jot of former love" should remain?
The speaker repeats himself because he wants to get the point across and wants the girl to move on and not remember this love. To just go on there will be no more them.
Imagine yourself as the person being addressed in this poem how would you feel after line 8?
If I was the person being addressed, after line 8, I would be upset with the speaker. He is basically breaking up with me but wants me to remember the love ? I don't think so. relationships end when one says so. So, i would be pretty upset with the speaker.
How does you view of the relationship change in the last six lines? How does presenting "love" as a dying person affect your response?
My view changes because the man in the poem is dying and he just wants the girl to know that he loves her and he will continue to love her when he finally passes. Any person has more sympathy when a person dies.
The Poem speaks to "you" who is this "you" what clues does the poem give us about the character you?
The poem is speaking to who ever the girl he was in love with was. The clues make seem like a guy talking to a girl becuase it is by a guy and back in that time guys would only look at girls and fall in love with girls.
question7
My response to the poem doesn't change much. The author died never marrying the girl he loved which is sad. instead the girl married some one else and he lived with her every summer. The informoation does not change my reaction to the poem.
Pg 93-94 questions
1.) I could picture myself in that scene. The scene I picture is like a lady relaxing in her hammock and her dog relaxing next to her. I would feel very relaxed and just happy and very content. If I ended up as the dogs protector I wouldnt be that upset. Not all dogs are trained to protect people.
2.) I think paragraphs 3-6 alters the mood from the paragraphs 1 and 2 by making it seem more as a frightened girl rather than a relaxed woman.
3.) The sentence makes me feel the like women was frightened by what she saw. My expectation is that she saw something scary or something that scared or made her uncomfortable.
4.) The reader understands how much the girl loves bears because her mom couldn't bare to tell her that the stuufed animal was thrown in the incinerator.
5.)The sofa and the construction of the porch really had no
response to the bears appearance. The bear smell gives the reader a better idea if the reader saw a bear up close in person.
6.) The reader gets a sense of danger because the different cultures had to put out the food to keep the bear away from their land. The bears are honored by having their heads put on steaks and is that really honoring them? More like killing them to me.
7.)The days are marked with X's because that is when the bears are most active and out. It does have to do with the bears.
8.)My reaction is that if I was in her position I would be scared to death. I would do the same thing and I think she had to do what she needed so the bear would not kill her.
9.)The next sentence is not surprising. the girl was obsessed with bears if she really wanted the claws she can have them and dig him up to get them.

Literature
Literature is the written art form of many good thinkers. People use writing literature as a way to express their feelings about something in such a way that the author chooses to express it. The way literature is written changes by what age it was written in. For instance, in some ages literature was writing a poem that was so complex that no one was able to understand it. This however progressed into writing that expressed basic emotions so that the reader could better relate to it. People read literature and gain a better vocabulary and the ability to better understand more complex writing and emotion. It is a gateway for expressing thoughts to others either directly or indirectly.
What is literature and why study it?
Literature is a wide ranged collections of stories, novels, poems, and other written works. It is the basis of the world's language. Literature outlives the years, we read and study works written hundreds of years ago by people who have long since been dead. Literature gives us a peak into the past. It allows us to share emotion and relate experiences. People may be able to relate to a certain piece of work to their life. People may also be inspired to write their own works based off of their reaction to some one else's. Literature is an outlet of creativity. We study it to learn, become better writers, to understand other cultures and time periods or simply to teach ourselves an outlet for our emotions. Clearly literature is a great cornerstone in our world because we are taught it since grade school and without it communication would be almost impossible.
