Literature is any kind of writing, whether it be displaying one's ideas or thoughts, telling a story, stating facts or opinions, or even what might appear to be senseless rambling.
We study literature in order to better understand it. You can read something and leave it at that, or you can read it, analyze it, pick it apart, and interpret it to understand its deeper meaning. Sometimes writers like to write in clever ways to make the reader think.
